ARBOURETUM

Arbouretum first began in late 2002 as a vehicle for singer/guitarist Daid Heumann's songwriting and compositional ideas. The first album, Long Live the Well-Doer, was recorded over the course of nearly a year, mostly by multitracking in recordist Rob Girardi's home studio. Heumann would first record some chord changes, longtime friend and collaborator David Bergander contributed drums and backing vocals, and other musicians such as the Anomoanon's Ned Oldham (bass), Walker Teret (bass and acoustic guitar), and Jennifer Hutt (violin), were invited to come in and help complete the process.

Months passed, and a core band devoted to live performance slowly coalesced. The sweeping, atmospheric textures of the first record soon gave way to a more visceral, elemental approach- amplifiers were turned up, drums were hit harder, and songs crescendoed into spiraling, noise-soaked climaxes. A couple of years spent intermittently touring, writing, and experimenting with new methods culminated in the recording of Arbouretum's second full-length, Rites of Uncovering. Released on Thrill Jockey Records in early 2007, Rites featured sludgy, fuzz-drenched passages of epic guitar invocations straddled atop grand and melodious song structures, an approach which led XLR8R to proclaim it "the best doom-folk record of all time".

Arbouretum's current lineup is Corey Allender (bass), Daniel Franz (drums), David Heumann (vocals and guitar), and Steve Strohmeier (guitar). Their anything-but-tame live shows are consistently "enthralling and exhilirating; they create a huge, thick, sound cocoon that you could step inside and live for several days" (twistedear.com)
