Boris were formed in the autumn of 1992; in 1996, their current line-up was established
Boris has supported many American bands on their tours of Japan, including SUNN0))),The Melvins, Cows, Karp,Thrones, Fu Manchu, Blue Bird and Pelican. Their performances with with SUNN0))), Merzbow, Masonna and Keiji Haino have led to collaborative releases.
Boris as a band have two personas, one Being "BORIS" in upper case and the other being "boris" in lower case. "BORIS" albums such as "Heavy Rocks" (Quatro Disk/UK 199*) and "Pink" (Diwphalan/Southern Lord 2006) have a more distinctive loud, Heavy Rock aspect, drawing influences from many Heavy Rock bands from the 1970's onwards. In contrast, "boris" albums have a more experimental approach. Albums such as "Mabuta No Ura" (Essence/Catune 2005) and "Feedbacker" (Diwphalanx, 2003) show the members' ability to write genre-defining music of a sound entirely their own, creating ambient soundscapes often breaking convention with single songs reaching over 40 minutes at a time.
The American record label Souther Lord Recordings have re-released four Boris albums to date—albums ranging from dark meditative Doom and Sludge to more Heavy Rock style albums, all garnering high critical acclaim in the U.S. and Europe.
Boris have been collaborating with Japanese noise artist Merzbow for the past 6 years, working under the moniker of "boris with Merzbow". Their most recent release was produced by Hydrahead Records.
The members of Boris created a design/promotional group called Fangsanalsatan in the late 1990's. Under this name, they produce the artwork for there own Japanese CD's and LP's, Tshirts, Fliers/Posters and Video as well as for other bands in Japan such as Masonna and The Wizards Convention festival.
